You go to open that message and notice it\u2019s filled with a lengthy paragraph of harsh words and demands you must fulfill, or your private data will be exposed to all your followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are immediately overcome with feelings of anxiety, panic, and stress, and you have no idea what to do. While this may have been an exercise in imagination for some, for others this is a harsh reality \u2014 the experience of being blackmailed on Instagram. Cases of online blackmail<\/a> due to dating catfishing<\/a> on the Instagram platform, especially different types of sextortion<\/a>, have become such a rising issue that Instagram launched new tools in 2024, to help protect their users against intimate image abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instagram is one of the largest and most popular social media platforms in the world, with over 2 billion monthly active users. Its massive user base, combined with the platform\u2019s visual focus, has made it an ideal hunting ground for cybercriminals looking for new victims to blackmail. These scammers take advantage of Instagram\u2019s accessibility and its culture of sharing personal images and information to manipulate innocent users, often with devastating consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>How Instagram Users Are Targeted for Blackmail<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Online blackmail is an attempt to obtain goods, whether that be money, property, or favors, from a person by threatening to publicize information that would incriminate, embarrass, or tarnish their reputation. In some cases, blackmail begins after an Instagram account is hacked<\/a>, giving the criminal full access to private messages, photos, and contacts. The most common form of blackmail on the platform is Instagram sextortion<\/a>, where the blackmailer uses explicit images of a victim to coerce them into paying to keep the images private.
Blackmailers use social media apps like Snapchat to threaten you<\/a> by using your own information against you. This can include threatening to publicize harmful content to a group chat containing your friends, family, and co-workers. Scammers can even create deepfakes by doctoring images of the victim. According to a recent study by Digital Forensics Corp. (DFC), of the reported cases of online blackmail originating on Instagram, 98% fell into one of four categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Catfishing for content<\/strong>.\u202fScammers create fake profiles, often using stock or AI-generated images of attractive individuals, to lure victims into romantic or enticing conversations. Once they successfully\u202fcatfish\u202fa victim, the blackmailer manipulates them into sharing some type of explicit content that shows their identity. They then threaten to leak the content if not paid, a specific type of blackmail known as\u202fsextortion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Instagram account hacking<\/strong>.\u202fUsing malware or direct hacking techniques, blackmailers gain access to the private Instagram accounts of targeted victims. They use this access to pull incriminating or embarrassing information or content that they can later use to blackmail the user with the threat of exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Romance scams<\/strong>.\u202fWhile similar to sextortion, romance scams aim to extort victims through requests for gifts once the idea of a romantic relationship is established.\u202f It is also important to know that, according to the DFC study, 60% of romance scams turned into sextortion scams if explicit content was shared with the blackmailer\u2019s account and the payment of gifts was refused.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Fake service scams<\/strong>.\u202fThese particular scams involved fraudulent offers for spiritual guidance, astrology, fertility rituals, and other mystical services. In these scams, victims were coerced into sending embarrassing videos or personal information, which the scammer then used to extort them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    <\/span>What Happens If You Fall Victim to an Instagram Blackmail Scam?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Falling prey to any one of these scams can create serious issues for victims, both mentally and financially. Here are the three most common types of blackmail a victim could face on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Sextortion<\/strong>.\u202fSextortion is a prevalent form of blackmail where the scammer threatens to release intimate images or videos unless a victim pays them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Personal information blackmail<\/strong>.\u202fPersonal information blackmail is a modern take on traditional blackmail where the scammers threaten to expose private information such as emails, financial details, or other embarrassing information online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Doxxing<\/strong>.\u202fA form of blackmail involving threats to release personally identifiable information (PII), including personal phone numbers, addresses, workplace details, or locations of familial members, often with the intent to harm or harass the victim.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      No matter the type of blackmail a cybercriminal uses to extort you, there are steps you can take to both prevent further attempts and take effective action to stop the current blackmailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
